Hangzhou sampled five samples of all formaldehyde exceeded
Bamboo mats are a popular choice for many families during the summer, often seen as a natural and comfortable bedding option. However, recent findings have raised concerns about their safety. According to a report by the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station, five bamboo mat samples purchased from a small commodity market in Hangzhou were found to contain excessive levels of formaldehyde—far beyond the acceptable limits.
The public is now questioning whether these everyday items might actually be harmful. "We usually check the food we eat for toxins, but we rarely think about products like bamboo mats," said Ms. Zhao, a local resident. "It seems we need to pay more attention now."
In response to public concern, reporters reached out to officials from the Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. They explained that their role is limited to inspecting the production process, and since bamboo mats are not manufactured locally, they don't oversee the product’s distribution in the market. Similarly, representatives from the Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce admitted that items like bamboo mats are often overlooked in inspections. They promised to increase monitoring of such products in the future.
Chen Qiuhong, an assistant manager at a department store, noted that bamboo mats are among the most popular summer items, with several sold daily during peak season. "All our mats are inspected before being put on the shelves, and we haven’t received any complaints about discomfort or health issues caused by formaldehyde," she said. She advised consumers to consider both price and quality when purchasing.
Many people today prefer buying mats from large supermarkets or shopping malls, especially during summer sales. Ms. Meng, a customer, shared her experience: "I bought my mat from a mall earlier this year, and I feel confident about its quality. Prices are similar to those at smaller stores, and with discounts, it's even better value." She added that while she's heard about formaldehyde in building materials, she hadn’t associated it with bamboo mats.
Experts recommend washing and airing new mats before use. According to the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station, formaldehyde can come from the raw materials themselves or from adhesives used in manufacturing. Some producers also use aldehyde-based solutions to prevent mold, which may contribute to higher levels of the chemical.
Although cases of formaldehyde-related health issues from bamboo mats are rare, Dr. Wang Jinfeng from Shaoxing Second Hospital’s Department of Dermatology warned of potential risks. He explained that high concentrations of formaldehyde can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, potentially causing allergic reactions, rashes, or even skin necrosis. However, if the formaldehyde level is within the national standard, most people won’t experience noticeable symptoms.
Dr. Wang advised that if someone experiences an allergic reaction, they should immediately rinse the affected area with water, avoid further exposure, and soak the mat in water before drying it in the sun. For severe cases, medical attention is recommended, and appropriate medication should be taken under professional guidance.
