Hangzhou sampled five samples of all formaldehyde exceeded

Bamboo mats have long been a popular choice for summer bedding among many families. However, recent findings from the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station have raised concerns. During a random sampling inspection of five bamboo mat products sold in a market in Hangzhou, all samples were found to contain excessive levels of formaldehyde, exceeding safety standards. Many people are unaware of this potential risk. “We usually focus on checking food and drinks for toxins, but we rarely think about the materials we sleep on,” said Ms. Zhao, a local resident. “Now that I know this, I’ll be more careful when buying bamboo mats.” The issue has sparked public concern, prompting the reporter to speak with officials from the Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. They explained that their role is limited to inspecting production quality, and since the city doesn’t manufacture bamboo mats, they don’t oversee the market distribution. Similarly, the Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce acknowledged that items like bamboo mats are often overlooked in inspections. They plan to increase monitoring in the future. Chen Qiuhong, an assistant manager at a department store, confirmed that bamboo mats are among the best-selling products during summer. “We ensure all our mats pass quality checks before being displayed. So far, we haven’t received any complaints about discomfort or skin irritation,” she said. She advised consumers to consider both price and quality when purchasing. With summer promotions drawing more people to buy mats from supermarkets and shopping malls, citizens like Ms. Meng feel more confident in their purchases. “Buying from large stores ensures better quality and reliability. Plus, the prices are competitive, especially with discounts,” she said. “I haven’t heard of anyone suffering from allergies due to bamboo mats. I associate formaldehyde more with building materials, not bedding.” Experts recommend washing and airing new mats before use. According to the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station, formaldehyde can come from raw materials like bamboo and wood, or it may be used as an adhesive during manufacturing. Some manufacturers also use aldehyde-based solutions to prevent mold. While cases of formaldehyde-related health issues from bamboo mats are rare, dermatologists warn of the risks. Dr. Wang Jinfeng from Shaoxing Second Hospital’s Department of Dermatology noted that high concentrations of formaldehyde can cause respiratory irritation, eye discomfort, headaches, and even allergic reactions such as dermatitis and pigmentation. However, as long as the formaldehyde content stays within national limits, most people won’t experience significant problems. In case of skin irritation, Dr. Wang advises washing the body thoroughly, removing the mat from the environment, soaking it in water, rinsing, and drying in sunlight. For severe cases, medical attention is recommended.
