The high-heeled heels make the lower legs thicker
On January 13th, during a hearing on the topic of high heels, it was highlighted that these shoes have long been a favorite among fashion-conscious women. They enhance a woman’s appearance, giving her a more elegant and feminine look. However, many modern women often worry: do high heels make the calves thicker? According to Professor Shi Shiyi, director of sports medicine at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, high heels can indeed affect the legs in various ways.
Professor Chen explained that women's concerns are not unfounded. When wearing high heels, the calf muscles (gastrocnemius) are constantly engaged and under tension while walking. Over time, this can lead to increased muscle strength. If the pace is too fast or the shoes are poorly designed, the calves may appear bulkier, reducing the overall aesthetic appeal. This effect is most noticeable with prolonged use of high heels.
In general, the ideal heel height is between 2 to 3 centimeters, and should not exceed 5 cm. Heels below 5 cm can actually make the leg muscles look more toned and flexible. When women wear high heels, the pelvis naturally tilts forward, causing the lower back to arch slightly. To maintain balance, the abdominal muscles are engaged, which can help create a more flattering figure and boost confidence.
However, Professor Chen also warned that even regular high heels don’t directly cause thicker calves, but they can lead to other physical issues. For example, walking in high heels places a lot of pressure on the lower back, increasing the risk of lumbar strain and back pain. Additionally, high heels alter the natural shape of the feet, making them more prone to ankle sprains and ligament injuries.
Pointed high heels can also lead to forefoot deformities, such as "floating hallux" (a condition where the big toe becomes misaligned), causing discomfort. For women who are pregnant, wearing high heels for extended periods may increase the risk of dystocia. The forward tilt of the pelvis can interfere with the baby’s descent into the birth canal, potentially complicating labor.
Therefore, it's best to limit the use of high heels to formal occasions and opt for flat shoes during leisure time. Here are some tips for maintaining your footwear:
- Transform old shoes by adding big spikes for a fresh look.
- Don't throw away old shoes—repurpose them instead.
- Add a cushion or insole for better support and comfort.
- Clean matte shoe surfaces properly to keep them looking new.
- Wear breathable, antibacterial socks to prevent bad odors.
- Know the hidden functions of the small tail on sports shoes.
- Reduce the noise from high heels with simple tricks.
- Choose the right shoes during pregnancy—flat shoes aren’t always safe.
- What to do if your shoes get moldy.
- Wearing certain shoes in the summer might be harmful to your health.
By taking care of your shoes and being mindful of how you wear them, you can enjoy both style and comfort without compromising your health.
