France's sharp increase in textile spending in August does not rise or fall

France's "Textile" recently reported that, according to the Economic Research Institute of the French Fashion Institute, the textile sector in France has seen a significant improvement in consumer spending. In August, the value of textile sales rose by 8.2% compared to the previous month. While this figure is still lower than the same period in 2007, it marks a clear recovery compared to the sharp declines in 2008 (-9.8%) and 2009 (-13.3%).

The report highlighted that the rise in sales was driven by factors such as the weakening euro and increased tourist activity. Large retail chains saw a 20.1% increase in textile sales, while Volkswagen stores recorded a 13.8% growth. Specialty stores experienced a 5.8% rise, independent shops saw an 8.9% increase, and large-scale retail outlets reported a 7.7% growth. Meanwhile, the overall market only grew by 2.9%, indicating that certain segments are outperforming the general trend.

August’s top-selling categories included children's clothing, which saw a 13% increase from July—a positive shift after a negative performance in the previous month. Women’s fashion also performed strongly, with a 19% rise, while men’s wear increased by 10.5%. However, some categories struggled: men’s undergarments only rose by 0.4%, and women’s undergarments declined by 0.7%. Analysts are concerned about the future performance of women’s underwear, suggesting that demand may remain weak in the coming months.
