introducing the melville cardigan + vest sewing pattern
Hello there, friends!
I’m thrilled to share with you one of my latest favorites—the Melville Cardigan + Vest! This design has been on my mind for a while, and I’m so excited to finally bring it to life.

As the name suggests, this style combines both a cardigan and a vest. It features a V-neck design, and the edges are finished on the inside with self facings. Trust me, I’ll dive deeper into those details later.
View A is a cropped cardigan with long sleeves, featuring buttons running down the front. Views B and C, on the other hand, are sleeveless vests that are button-free and have side vents for ease of movement. View B hits right at the knee, while View C is a midi-length option. Just like many of our patterns, you can mix and match these views to create unique styles. And yes, we’ve included cup sizes to ensure the perfect fit for everyone.

Now, let me tell you a little story behind this design. A couple of seasons back, I was brainstorming ideas for something new and shared my struggle with my friend Maria during our coffee catch-up. She instantly suggested a cardigan. At first, I was a bit hesitant because most knitting patterns tend to look a little homemade when completed. However, after putting in some serious thought and research, I realized that the key lies in the finishing. Instead of using traditional bindings, I designed the edges to be finished with facings. This approach ensures that the final piece looks polished and professional.

I also couldn’t resist adding a vest option to the mix. There’s something about both styles that appeals to different moods and occasions. Longer cardigans, like View A, are perfect for layering over shirts or even wearing solo. They feel cozy, almost like a second coat, especially in colder weather. Meanwhile, the vest offers a sleek and elegant look—perfect for those who prefer something more streamlined.

One fun detail I wanted to highlight is the small V-notch on the sleeve. It adds a touch of flair without being overly complicated. If you prefer a cleaner look, you can easily omit it.

When it comes to fabrics, any knit with at least 20% stretch will work beautifully. Think cotton/spandex jersey, interlock, French terry, or even sweatshirt material. Sweater knits are also fantastic, though I’d recommend being cautious with very drapey fabrics. For instance, the pink sweater knit I used for View C has a lot of drape, and I was initially concerned about how the facings would behave after some time. It turned out fine, but cutting the front facings a bit longer might help if you're working with similar materials. Beyond that, feel free to experiment with bold colors and textures!
