Valentino's new series creates the right direction

Valentino's legendary founder, Valentino Garavani, led the brand for almost 50 years, shaping its iconic red evening gowns into a symbol of elegance and glamour at major events like the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival. After decades of influence, he finally stepped down last year, passing the torch to a new generation of designers. His successor, Alexandra Facchinetti, took over for less than a year but struggled to find her footing, eventually being replaced by long-time collaborators Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. The duo has since taken the brand in a fresh direction, blending tradition with modernity. At the 2010 spring-summer Paris fashion show, the brand unveiled a collection featuring ruffles, bows, and bold designs that captured the attention of both critics and customers. CEO Stefano Sassi shared his excitement about the response, stating, “The media has given this collection rave reviews. We’re thrilled because it reflects a new vision for Valentino—emphasizing individuality, self-expression, while still honoring the brand’s rich heritage.” Sassi added, “It’s not easy to find the right path forward, but we believe in perseverance. With time, we are confident that our future will be limitless.” He also noted that the collection was well-received by buyers, leading to improved wholesale sales. However, Sassi remains cautious, acknowledging that “the market needs time to stabilize.” This sentiment aligns with broader trends in the luxury industry, as global luxury sales are expected to drop by 8% this year, according to U.S. consultancy Bain & Co. At a fixed exchange rate, the decline is projected to reach 11%, or around 153 billion euros (about 223.8 billion U.S. dollars). The economic slowdown has significantly reduced demand for high-end fashion, jewelry, and watches. Valentino is part of the Valentino Fashion Group, which also includes brands like Hugo Boss and Marlboro. The group was acquired by private equity firm Permira in 2007, marking a new chapter in its history. As the brand continues to evolve under new leadership, it faces both challenges and opportunities in an ever-changing market.
