Valentino's new series creates the right direction
Valentino's founder, Valentino Garavani, led the brand for almost five decades, shaping its iconic red evening gowns into a staple at prestigious events like the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival. After a long and influential career, he officially stepped down last year, marking a new chapter for the house.
His successor, Alexandra Facchinetti, took over but only lasted less than a year before being replaced by longtime collaborators Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. The transition has been closely watched by fashion insiders, as the brand seeks to balance tradition with innovation under new creative leadership.
At the 2010 spring-summer Paris fashion show, Valentino unveiled a collection featuring delicate ruffles and bows, capturing attention from both critics and buyers. CEO Stefano Sassi shared his excitement about the response, stating that the media praised the collection for embodying a fresh yet authentic vision of the brand. "It reflects individuality, self-expression, and is deeply rooted in the history of Valentino, while also being modern and unconventional," he said during an event on November 3rd.
Sassi expressed confidence in the direction the brand is taking, saying, "It's not easy to find the right path, but I believe that with perseverance, we will have an unlimited future." He added that the collection was well-received by retailers, leading to improved wholesale sales.
However, he acknowledged that the luxury market remains challenging. According to Bain & Co, global luxury sales are expected to drop by 8% this year—11% at a fixed exchange rate—amounting to 153 billion euros (about 223.8 billion U.S. dollars). This decline is largely due to reduced consumer spending driven by the ongoing economic crisis.
Valentino is part of the Valentino Fashion Group, which also includes brands like Hugo Boss and Marlboro. The group was acquired by private equity firm Permira in 2007, signaling a shift in ownership and strategy. As the brand moves forward, it continues to navigate a complex landscape while staying true to its legacy.
