weekend links, special sarvi edition
Liesl has been on the road this week, so she hasn't been able to compile her usual Friday round-up of links and inspiring visuals. Don't worry, though! We've got a special guest contributor stepping in today to help with our weekly reading post. You might remember Sarvi, who previously shared her insightful posts on Photography 101 and Photography 102. She's back with some fantastic suggestions for the weekend.
Hey everyone! After enduring what felt like an endless summer heatwave here in Los Angeles, the temperatures have finally cooled down, and it's time to start thinking about the upcoming holiday season.
My sister follows a vegetarian diet, and traditional holiday meals often revolve around turkey or ham, which can be challenging for her. Most vegetarians I know are incredibly gracious when it comes to eating side dishes, but how much excitement can you really muster after your hundredth helping of steamed zucchini?
To spice up our holiday feasts, I've been searching for vegetable-focused recipes that not only look appealing but also promise to tantalize the taste buds. Here are three standouts from April Bloomfield, Suzanne Goin, and Yotam Ottolenghi—renowned chefs whose cookbooks I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.
Do you have a cherished vegetarian dish you bring out during the holidays?
Between these festive occasions, we're smack dab in the middle of a serene period in the school year. Routines are well-established, and it’s mostly about maintaining motivation as things settle into a predictable rhythm, especially with extracurricular activities. My six-year-old daughter is still experimenting with various pursuits. We tried soccer (not a hit), tae kwon do (showed promise but fizzled), and now she’s diving into ballet. To keep her inspired, I follow several young ballet stars on Instagram. It’s exciting to catch glimpses of their rehearsals and understand the dedication behind their seemingly effortless performances. I particularly admire Ashley Bouder, Marcelo Gomes, and Gillian Murphy from the American Ballet Theatre. Here's a stunning photo of Gillian Murphy.
What about your kids? Do they jump from activity to activity? How do you strike a balance between encouraging exploration and fostering persistence as they develop their skills?
While my daughter’s in ballet class, I take advantage of the school’s no-parent viewing policy to unwind with some quiet time. I used to be a voracious reader, but somehow, life got in the way. With a child constantly demanding attention, it’s easier to skim online articles than immerse myself in a book. But now that she’s older, I’ve rediscovered the joy of diving into literature. I recently fell victim to Ferrante Fever. (It’s real, trust me—Google it!) Seven novels later, I was left breathless. I held off on starting the final unread Ferrante novel because I wasn’t ready to face the end of her world. Fortunately, the publisher, Europa Editions, offers a stellar selection, and I’ve already picked up two more authors to read.
Has any author or series ever consumed you so deeply that you couldn’t resist devouring everything they’ve written?
Pinterest Picks
I tend to lose hours exploring Pinterest, so I’ve started organizing my findings by creating boards based on patterns I want to experiment with. This Lanvin dress could inspire a beautiful Playtime Dress featuring insertion lace, don’t you think?
Wouldn’t these ruffles following the Hide-And-Seek bodice along the shoulder look delightful?
And what if we added wide ties to the front seams of the Carousel Dress for a similar effect?
Check out this adorable child’s outfit for inspiration!
